my e-Portfolio

Welcome to my e-portfolio...hope you enjoy, please dont forget to leave a message!

My name is Mpho-Entle Naicker, Mpho-entle. NOT Mpho! Mpho-e-ntle means 'a beautiful gift', Mpho means gift, Entle (or e ntle) means, "a beautiful one' - that is the distinguishing factor. 😎

Firstly, I am a proudly South African citizen, a daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, and many more beautiful things... I am also a lecturer by profession, which is the focus of this e-portfolio. This e-portfolio was designed as an example to help my students in developing and designing their own e-portfolios, so this e-portfolio does not fully capture my profile.

E-portfolios are important teaching and learning tools, especially in distance education and e-learning environments, and now in the entrance of the Covid-19 pandemic that forced many HEIs to move to online spaces. E-portfolios can also be used for teaching and learning in high school. IF well designed, it is a fun way to teach and to learn.

So, I teach at the University of South Africa, currently teaching two modules. One module is completely run online, with the use of Mahara (and other online platforms, e.g. Site123, Weebly e-portfolio) and another is a blended module, which is run via the University's Learning Management System (LMS) called myUnisa, and via the correspondence mode of delivery.

Most of my learners for the online module Instructional Techniques and Multimedia in Adult Education (INTMAEU) (NQF8) are lecturers from other educational institutions, and a few from government. This module is offered online and has an e-portfolio submitted for summative assessment/exam. This module is however being phased out and will no longer be offered from 2022.

Instructional Studies in Context (ISC3701) is NQF7 exit level blended module for the BEd qualification in the College of Education, at Unisa. With this module, some activities are done offline, like written assignments, but there are discussion forums that happens on myUnisa. The exam is also an e-portfolio submitted via a PDF file format, but students can also submit the hard copy version of their portfolio.

You can see my other e-portfolio on Weebly for more on my Profile!

Teaching

When I was a kid, although I have always had such respect for teachers, but I never really thought of myself becoming a teacher, let alone teaching at a university! But here I am, a passionate teacher, teaching in the age of digital technologies and a diversity of learners and learning needs. Life without teachers is really doomed!

Research

I love research, I especially enjoy collaborative research projects that brings together a fountain of talents and passions from the team members. In Setswana, there is an idiom that says "Tau e senang seboka e siiwa ke none e tlhotsa" meaning "To work alone is harder than with help". The African philosophy of UBUNTU (Motho ke motho ka batho) says "I am because you are" or "You are because we are". So if its anything about academic professional development, educational technologies, e-portfolios, teaching strategies, student support, online learning/e-learning, technology adoption, open distance education, then I am ready to collaborate, you can contact me on modismp@unisa.ac.za.

Project Managment

I actually approach every task as a project, anything, even just going to the shop, I put down a list of things to buy, other places I might need to go to, an so forth. Although we don't always have control on everything, however, planning is the first key success factor on a daily basis!

Content Managment

Oh, I have designed and managed content online, website management, learning content, etc., and this is aligned to planning and also excellent filing and e-file management skills.

Workshop Facilitation

Hahhaa, even with my heightened level of nervousness, but once the clock start, the nervous energy is turned into adrenalin!! :)

Teaching with technology

Continuous professional development and student support in an open and distance e-learning institution: a case study

Faced with emerging technologies and a diversity of students entering higher education in South Africa, lecturers must continuously equip themselves with the necessary skills to teach and support today’s learners effectively. This article reports on the lessons learnt and experiences of academics at an open distance learning (ODL) institution who participated for the first time in the fully online teaching and learning programme at an international institution, through a partnership aimed at developing academic capacity in ODL.

How postgraduate students in open and distance education institution perceive the use of e-portfolio as a teaching and learning tool

E-portfolios have been used for decades in education; however, it is still a new trend in some developing countries as they continue to adopt e-learning practices. The study investigated postgraduate students’ experiences and perceptions of using an e-portfolio as a teaching tool to support their learning in an open and distance e-learning (ODeL) university in South Africa.
